The Director
Buddhadeb Dasgupta is arguably India’s most eminent film maker at present. What gives special interest to this spectacular film maker is not the extent to which he has carried on the tradition set by Ray, Ghatak and the like, but rather in the ways in which he has consciously avoided incurring any debt at all to the founding luminaries of the Indian art cinema or to any other film maker , for that matter. His works have won numerous awards in India and abroad. Once a teacher of economics, Buddhadeb Dasgupta is also a renowned Bengali poet whose work has been translated in different Indian and European languages. Some of his popular and notable films are “Duratwa” (Distance,1978), “Neem Annapurna” (Bitter Morse,1979),“Grihayuddha” (Crossroads,1982), “Lal Darja” (The Red Door,1996) .
